We squeeze down the narrow stairs and feel cozy on the forest green seats set against mahogany panels and rich teak finishes.

Built for bay sailing, cruises and entertainment, this hearty chip, completed in  1988, made  several maiden voyages before settling permanently in the San Francisco Bay.

The Hawaiian Chieftain
Adventures in
Tall Ship Sailing

Using modern materials to make the ship comfortable and secure, it is a rich blend of classic sailing and 20th century luxuries.

Many ways to enjoy the Ship

  • Brunch sails

  • Sunset cruises

  • Whale watching in the Farallon Islands

  • Seafaring adventures

A crew member describes the intricacies of sailing the vessel, how much there is to do to keep her on course, and how all the effort and planning to make this ship traditional, safe and luxurious have paid off in smooth movement and easy maneuverability.

We leave the ship with a new appreciation for craftsmanship and caring and plan to get a brunch in before we leave.

Looking west, the weather looks dismal, but we’ve heard that the Marin Headlands are the Bay Area’s best kept secret.  We have to see what it’s all about.
