Bolinas
feels like a place to hang out when you really need to get
away from it all.
|
|
Being the southern
gateway to
Point Reyes National
Seashore,
there are
spectacular
hikes
in the area.
Birdwatchers can
visit the
Point Reyes Bird
Observatory,
beachcombers can
have their day at
Agate Beach
and historians can
browse the tiny
museum on Wharf
Street.
There are plenty of
bed and breakfasts
and
Smiley’s Schooner Saloon
and Hotel
downtown. |
| I’d seen an ad for
the Bolinas Bakery &
Café with the message, Hard to
find, impossible to forget.
We duck beneath the trees and follow the little
path. A large
Victorian house with a huge patio surprises us.
We have to look inside.
In
the entry, tattered stairs —
each step painted with
flowers, an
extension of the mural on the wall
— lead up to the second floor. An old
fashioned chandelier hangs from the ceiling.
It feels like someone’s old house (or brothel).

We
still don’t see a bakery. The
second floor is a mess. Someone’s
office greets us at the top of the stairs.
Papers are stacked and strewn everywhere.
We have a feeling we’re not supposed to be here so we go back
downstairs and find the bakery hidden down the hall.
The energy changes; the bakery is bright and clean, little tables
look out on the patio and baked goods look appetizing behind glass
counters.
Back
behind the stairs, the ambiance changes again.
A dark, intimate room with a classy bar and elegant little tables
conjures images of an intimate rendezvous.
The wonderful weirdness of the 70's flies
through my head. The place is full of mystery and romance, the
message in the ad I'd seen earlier making sense now.
Having
accomplished our mission, we head back to the hotel. |
